After a Day of Harmony, a Mercurial Trump Upends Leaders’ Summit

Gathering in a sun-drenched spa town on the sparkling waters of Lake Geneva, the leaders of the Group of 7 put aside months of rancor to praise President Trump for his preliminary deal with Iran. They declared it a “breakthrough” that would unclog the Strait of Hormuz and could put the Middle East on a path to peace. And they got the United States to sign a remarkably unified joint statement on Ukraine, pledging “unwavering support” for Kyiv in its war against Moscow.

Then, on Wednesday, hours before the leaders were scheduled to disperse, Mr. Trump threw a few rocks in the water. The president warned that if he was dissatisfied with the final Iran deal, he could rip it up and restart the bombardment of the country. If the Iranians did not behave properly, he said, “we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head.”

Mr. Trump’s inflammatory statements left the rest of the leaders scrambling to catch up. His outburst over Iran sowed fresh doubts about the deal’s durability, even as Mr. Trump continued to insist it was very strong. And it punctured any illusions — such as those that still exist about Mr. Trump — that European leaders could corral the president with a mixture of pomp, charm and gifts.

The last-day twist from Mr. Trump was a reminder of what can happen when his unfiltered, improvisational style collides with the diplomatic cadence and meticulous choreography of an international summit meeting.

Nothing captured the head-spinning twists more starkly than when the president, who spent much of his time in Évian selling his deal, suddenly suggested that maybe there wouldn’t be anything to sign this week after all.

“My whole life is about deals,” Mr. Trump said at a news conference at the end of the meeting. “Crazy things happen with deals.” He added that if everything went wrong, he might blame it on Vice President JD Vance.

President Emmanuel Macron of France, the host of the meeting, sought to put a good face on the outcome — mainly because the Trump administration, after more than a year of lukewarm support for Ukraine, had signed on to the joint statement pledging full backing to Kyiv. Speaking at a press briefing, he said the summit marked a pivot in Mr. Trump’s approach to Ukraine.

“President Trump has said that we must take a much harder line,” Mr. Macron said. “I really want to welcome the United States’ commitment.”

The French president was more cautious about the Iran deal, noting that key issues still had to be worked out in a subsequent negotiation and that questions remained about its details. He said a European maritime mission to secure marine traffic in the strait was ready to go, but he said it would hinge on nailing down agreements with Iran and Oman, which lie on either side of the waterway.

“Does it solve every problem? No,” Mr. Macron said of Mr. Trump’s framework deal. “Are there risks? Yes.”

Other European leaders echoed Mr. Macron’s positive mood. Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany told reporters that the statement on Ukraine was the first of its kind after a Group of 7 meeting since Mr. Trump took office. He said it sent a clear message to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

“All G7 partners will increase pressure on Moscow, including through new sanctions,” Mr. Merz said. The statement, he added, “set a new tone” in trans-Atlantic relations, which have been badly frayed by disagreements over the Iran war, Mr. Trump’s threats to take over Greenland from Denmark, and his frequent attacks on centrist leaders in Europe.

By one yardstick, this summit was a success: Mr. Trump stayed until the end, which he had not done at previous Group of 7 meetings, including two hosted by Canada. That was a tribute to the resourcefulness of Mr. Macron, whose invitation to Mr. Trump to dine with him at the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday evening, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, was enough to persuade him to stick around.

Barwick’s success in dressage, a major Paralympic equestrian discipline, underscores Canada’s long-standing commitment to excelling in para-sports.

Equestrian Events at the Paralympics

Equestrian events at the Paralympics focus on para-dressage, where riders perform a series of predetermined movements (tests) within an arena. The sport requires a unique blend of balance, coordination, and harmony between rider and horse. Para-dressage is divided into different grades based on the functional abilities of the riders, ensuring a level playing field.

At the 2024 Paralympics, the competition will likely feature athletes from all over the globe, including Canada’s top contenders. Riders will be assessed on their precision, technical ability, and overall performance, with medals awarded across multiple grades.

Jordan Love: The Future of the Green Bay Packers and His Growing Popularity in Canada

As the starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL season, Jordan Love has taken on the monumental task of filling the shoes of the legendary Aaron Rodgers. This transition has captivated football fans across the globe, including an increasing number of fans in Canada, where the NFL has steadily grown in popularity. Love’s ascension to the starting role has ignited hope among Packers fans and sparked the curiosity of Canadian football enthusiasts who are eager to see if the young quarterback can live up to the high expectations that come with leading one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.

Who is Jordan Love?

Jordan Love was born on November 2, 1998, in Bakersfield, California. He played college football at Utah State, where his exceptional arm strength, athleticism, and ability to make big plays quickly caught the attention of NFL scouts. Love's standout performance during his sophomore year in 2018, where he threw for over 3,500 yards and 32 touchdowns, put him on the NFL radar as a top quarterback prospect. Although his junior season was more inconsistent, his physical tools and potential led the Green Bay Packers to select him with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Love was drafted as the apparent heir to Aaron Rodgers, a decision that sparked much controversy at the time. Rodgers, who went on to win multiple MVP awards after Love's selection, remained the Packers' starter for three more seasons, leaving Love in a backup role. Despite limited playing time in his first three years, Love used the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, and in 2023, with Rodgers being traded to the New York Jets, Love was finally named the starter.

Love's Journey to the Starting Role

Jordan Love’s path to becoming the starting quarterback was anything but traditional. Drafted to sit behind a future Hall of Famer, Love spent three years on the sidelines, learning the nuances of the game and adapting to the NFL’s pace. During this time, he only had a few opportunities to showcase his talents, including brief appearances in relief of Rodgers. One of the most notable games came in 2021, when Love started against the Kansas City Chiefs due to Rodgers being out with COVID-19. Though the Packers lost, Love’s performance provided glimpses of his potential.

The 2023 offseason marked a significant shift for both Love and the Packers. When Rodgers was traded to the Jets, it officially ended the Rodgers era in Green Bay and ushered in the Jordan Love era. Packers fans were hopeful yet anxious. After all, Green Bay had gone from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers—two back-to-back Hall of Fame quarterbacks who brought sustained success to the franchise. Now, the pressure was on Love to continue that legacy.

Jordan Love’s 2023 Season: A New Beginning

The 2023 season was Jordan Love’s true introduction to the NFL world as the Packers’ starting quarterback. His first few games were highly scrutinized, as fans and analysts alike wanted to see how he would handle the pressure of leading a team with such a rich history of quarterback play. While there were some ups and downs throughout the season, Love demonstrated remarkable poise, accuracy, and decision-making that indicated he was more than capable of being the Packers’ long-term answer at quarterback.

Love’s ability to extend plays with his legs and his deep-ball accuracy quickly became hallmarks of his game. His connection with young receivers like Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs further boosted confidence in the Packers' offensive future. As the season progressed, Love’s leadership qualities and growing confidence became increasingly apparent, which helped Green Bay stay competitive in the NFC North.

The Growing Popularity of Jordan Love in Canada

While Green Bay Packers fans in the United States have closely followed Love’s rise, his popularity is also increasing in Canada. The NFL has been steadily growing its fan base in Canada over the years, with games broadcast nationally on Canadian networks and thousands of Canadians crossing the border to attend games in U.S. stadiums.

The Packers, in particular, have a strong following in Canada, especially in provinces like Ontario, where the proximity to the U.S. border makes attending Packers games in nearby cities like Detroit and Buffalo more accessible. The team’s rich history, along with the success of past quarterbacks like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, has long attracted Canadian fans, and now, with the emergence of Jordan Love, there is renewed excitement among this fan base.

Several factors contribute to Love's appeal in Canada:

  1. Green Bay's Broad Appeal: As one of the most recognizable and successful franchises in NFL history, the Packers' games are often prime-time events watched by fans in both the U.S. and Canada. Love, as the new face of the franchise, is naturally drawing attention north of the border.

  2. Young, Dynamic Playstyle: Canadian sports fans appreciate athleticism and excitement in their favorite athletes. Love’s dual-threat ability as a quarterback, coupled with his youth, makes him an intriguing player to watch for fans who enjoy dynamic, fast-paced football.

  3. NFL's Growing Presence in Canada: The NFL has been expanding its reach in Canada through increased broadcasting rights, partnerships, and marketing efforts. Love's journey is happening at a time when more Canadians are watching and engaging with NFL content, making him a key figure in the sport’s expansion in Canada.

  4. Canadian Connection to the NFL Draft: Many Canadian sports fans follow the NFL Draft with great interest, and Love’s story as a first-round pick who patiently waited for his chance resonates with fans who appreciate perseverance and development.

Love's Role in NFL International Expansion

The NFL has been pushing to grow its fan base internationally, including in countries like Canada, Mexico, and the U.K. Players like Jordan Love are critical to this effort, as they represent the future of the league. Love’s ability to excite fans with his athleticism, combined with the Packers’ widespread appeal, positions him as a figure who can help expand the NFL’s reach in Canada and beyond.

The NFL has also explored the possibility of playing more regular-season games in Canada, similar to the International Series games held in London and Mexico City. If such a game were to take place, it’s likely that the Packers, with their large fan base, would be a prime candidate to play, and Jordan Love would be front and center in these efforts to grow the game internationally.

The Future of Jordan Love and His Impact

As Jordan Love continues to develop as a quarterback, his impact on both the Packers and the broader football world will only grow. For Canadian fans, Love represents a new chapter in the NFL’s storied quarterback tradition. His rise comes at a time when the sport is becoming more popular in Canada, and his success could further fuel that growth.

Should Love succeed in leading the Packers to playoff contention and eventually a Super Bowl, his popularity in Canada will likely soar even higher, solidifying his status as not only a star in the U.S. but also a key figure in the NFL's international appeal.

Conclusion

Jordan Love’s journey from a first-round pick waiting in the wings to the starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers is one that has captivated fans around the world, including a growing number of supporters in Canada. As the NFL continues to gain traction north of the border, Love’s success will play a pivotal role in expanding the league’s international fan base. For Canadian fans, Jordan Love represents hope, potential, and the excitement of the future of football

7 U.S. troops injured in raid with Iraqi forces targeting Islamic State group militants

Auto Refresh and Link Loop

The United States military and Iraq launched a joint raid targeting suspected Islamic State group militants in the country's western desert that killed at least 15 people and saw seven American troops hurt, officials said Saturday.

For years after dislodging the militants from their self-declared caliphate across Iraq and Syria, U.S. forces have continued fighting the Islamic State group, though the casualties from Friday's raid were higher than others in previous ones.

The U.S. military's Central Command alleged the militants were armed with "numerous weapons, grenades, and explosive 'suicide' belts" during the attack, which Iraqi forces said happened in the country's Anbar Desert.

"This operation targeted ISIS leaders to disrupt and degrade ISIS' ability to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against Iraqi civilians, as well as U.S. citizens, allies, and partners throughout the region and beyond," Central Command said, using an acronym for the militant group. "Iraqi Security Forces continue to further exploit the locations raided."

It added: "There is no indication of civilian casualties."

An Iraqi military statement said "airstrikes targeted the hideouts, followed by an airborne operation."

"Among the dead were key ISIS leaders," Iraq's military said, without identifying them. "All hideouts, weapons and logistical support were destroyed, explosive belts were safely detonated and important documents, identification papers and communication devices were seized."

A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the operation yet to be made public, told The Associated Press that five American troops were wounded in the raid, while two others suffered injuries from falls during the operation. One who suffered a fall was transported out of the region, while one of the wounded was evacuated for further treatment, the official said.

"All personnel are in stable condition," the official said.

It wasn't immediately clear why it took two days for the U.S. to acknowledge it took part in the raid. Iraq did not say the U.S. took part in the operation when initially announcing it, as politicians debate the future of having American troops in the country. There are approximately 2,500 U.S. troops in Iraq.

Since the U.S. toppled dictator Saddam Hussein with its 2003 invasion of Iraq, the country has struggled to balance relations between America and neighboring Iran. Since the Israel-Hamas war broke out, Iraqi militias allied with Iran have targeted U.S. forces there, leading to American airstrikes targeting them.

At its peak, the Islamic State group ruled an area half the size of the U.K. It attempted to enforce its extreme interpretation of Islam, which included attacks on religious minority groups and harsh punishment of Muslims deemed to be apostates.

A coalition of more than 80 countries led by the United States was formed to fight the group, which lost its hold on the territory it controlled in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019.

However, the militants have continued to operate in the Anbar Desert in Iraq and Syria, while claiming attacks carried out by others elsewhere in the world inspired by the group. That includes the two suspects in a foiled plot to attack Taylor Swift shows in Vienna and a fatal stabbing attack in Germany.

Iraqi officials say that they can keep the ISIS threat under control with their own forces and have entered into talks with the U.S. aimed at winding down the mission of the U.S.-led military coalition in Iraq.

Trump to vote against Florida abortion measure after backlash

Auto Refresh and Link Loop

Donald Trump has said he will vote against a ballot measure in his home state of Florida that would protect abortion rights after facing backlash from conservative supporters.

The former president's announcement came one day after an NBC News interview in which he appeared to support the measure - a statement that caused anti-abortion activists to openly criticise him.

On Friday, Trump told Fox News that he still thinks Florida's ban on abortions after six weeks is too strict.

However he said would still vote "no" on a measure that would amend the state's constitution to protect abortion rights.

You need more time than six weeks," Trump said. "I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it."

He then falsely alleged that Democrats in the US supported allowing abortions at any point during a pregnancy, which he used as his explanation for deciding to vote against the ballot measure in Florida as a voter in the state.

Abortion laws vary widely in states across the US, but procedures after 21 weeks of pregnancy are rare and are often related to foetal anomalies or threats to the mother's life, according to the non-profit health organisation KFF.

The Republican presidential nominee's decision to vote against the Florida abortion measure comes just one day after he was asked by NBC News how he would vote.

“I think the six week is too short,” Trump said in the interview on Thursday. “It has to be more time. I told them that I want more weeks.”

“I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks,” he said when pressed.

His Democratic opponent, Vice-President Kamala Harris, quickly responded to Trump's announcement that he would support continuing Florida's abortion ban as indicative of him continuing his anti-abortion stance.

“Donald Trump just made his position on abortion very clear: He will vote to uphold an abortion ban so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant," she said in a statement.

Trump's comments open him to conservative criticism

Thursday's comments - in which Trump appeared to be open to voting in favour of the constitutional amendment - were heavily criticised by leaders in the anti-abortion movement, which plays a critical role in shaping conservative politics in the US.

“If Donald Trump loses, today is the day he lost,” conservative pundit Erick Erickson wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“The committed pro-life community could turn a blind eye, in part, to national abortion issues. But for Trump to weigh in on Florida as he did will be a bridge too far for too many.”

Albert Mohler Jr, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote on X that Trump's comments on reproductive rights, including on the six-week ban, "seem almost calculated to alienate prolife voters".

“Pro-life Christian voters are going to have to think clearly, honestly, and soberly about our challenge in this election - starting at the top of the ticket," he said.

After the Thursday NBC interview, the Trump campaign and his running mate JD Vance made public statements emphasising that the former president had not yet made up his mind on the ballot initiative.

Mr Vance said the former president will "make his own announcement on how he's going to vote" on the Florida measure that will be based on "his own judgement".

Trump has criticised Florida's six-week abortion ban before.

Last September he said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made a "terrible mistake" signing the ban into law.

Mr DeSantis was challenging the former president in the Republican primary at the time

House Democrats ask Army for report on Arlington incident involving Trump campaign staff

Auto Refresh and Link Loop

Democratic lawmakers with the House Oversight Committee sent a letter Friday to the U.S. Army requesting a report into an altercation earlier this week involving an Arlington National Cemetery employee and Trump staff who brought campaign photographers to the cemetery.

In the letter, the committee's ranking member, Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, wrote to Army Secretary Christine Wormuth that he was "hopeful you can provide the Committee with a full account" of Monday's incident.

Former President Donald Trump visited the cemetery to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to commemorate three years since the 2021 Kabul suicide bombing that killed 13 service members during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The confrontation occurred when Trump's campaign brought its own photographers to Section 60 of the cemetery, where veterans of the recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars are buried.

While the exact details remain unclear, an Army spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News Thursday that the employee was "abruptly pushed aside," calling it "unfortunate" that the "employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked."

The cemetery said in a statement this week that "federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries, to include photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate's campaign."

In his letter, Raskin wrote that "it appears that the Trump campaign refused to abide by Arlington National Cemetery's absolute prohibition," and cited Arlington's guidelines prohibiting "filming for partisan, political, or fundraising purposes" under the Hatch Act.

Defense officials previously told CBS News that some staff with the Trump campaign were unprofessional and were aggressive both verbally and physically toward the cemetery official

"ANC conducts nearly 3,000 such public ceremonies a year without incident," the Army spokesperson said in the statement. "Participants in the August 26th ceremony and the subsequent Section 60 visit were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds."

The Trump campaign, meanwhile, has insisted that it was given express permission by Gold Star families to bring "campaign designated media." Messages reviewed by CBS News verified this claim.

A Trump campaign spokesperson also said that "there was no physical altercation as described and we are prepared to release footage if such defamatory claims are made."

Raskin also cited an apology issued by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who attended the ceremony with Trump and posted several photos of the event to his official social media accounts.

"This was not a campaign event and was never intended to be used by the campaign," Cox wrote in a social media post Wednesday. "It did not go through the proper channels and should not have been sent. My campaign will be sending out an apology."

Raskin called on the Army to provide an "incident report" and "a briefing," and requested that Wormuth respond by Sept. 9

Far right eyes political earthquake as Germans head to the polls

As Germany prepares for its upcoming elections, a dramatic shift in the political landscape seems to be unfolding, one that could have profound implications for the country and beyond. The far-right, once relegated to the fringes of German politics, is now eyeing a significant breakthrough. This article delves into the factors contributing to the rise of far-right sentiments in Germany, the potential outcomes of the elections, and the broader implications for Europe and the world.

The Rise of the Far-Right in Germany

Germany's far-right political movement, led primarily by the Alternative for Germany (AfD), has seen a surge in support in recent years. The AfD was founded in 2013 as a Eurosceptic party, initially focusing on opposition to the euro currency. However, it quickly evolved into a broader far-right movement, capitalizing on issues such as immigration, national identity, and dissatisfaction with mainstream political parties.

The party's rise can be attributed to several factors:

  1. Immigration and National Identity: The refugee crisis of 2015-2016, when Germany admitted over a million refugees, predominantly from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, was a turning point. While Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision was lauded by many for its humanitarian stance, it also fueled fears about cultural integration, security, and the economic burden of supporting refugees. The AfD effectively tapped into these fears, positioning itself as the defender of German identity and sovereignty.

  2. Economic Anxiety: Despite Germany's robust economy, there is a growing sense of economic insecurity among certain segments of the population. The rise of globalization and technological advancements has left some workers feeling left behind. The AfD has been able to channel this discontent, particularly in regions of the former East Germany, where economic disparities are more pronounced.

  3. Disillusionment with Mainstream Parties: The traditional political parties in Germany, including the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), have faced increasing criticism for their handling of key issues such as climate change, housing, and healthcare. Many voters feel that these parties have become disconnected from the everyday concerns of ordinary Germans. The AfD, with its populist rhetoric and promises to "shake up" the political establishment, has emerged as a viable alternative for these disillusioned voters.

  4. European Union Skepticism: The AfD's Eurosceptic stance resonates with voters who are frustrated with the perceived overreach of the European Union (EU). Issues such as EU regulations, bailouts for struggling member states, and the handling of the Eurozone crisis have fueled resentment among some Germans. The AfD's call for Germany to prioritize its national interests over those of the EU has found a receptive audience.

The Upcoming Elections: A Turning Point?

As Germans head to the polls, the AfD's growing influence is undeniable. Polls indicate that the party could secure a significant portion of the vote, potentially becoming the third-largest party in the Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament. In some regions, particularly in the east, the AfD is even polling as the leading party.

This rise has sparked fears of a "political earthquake" that could fundamentally alter the German political landscape. The implications of a strong AfD showing in the elections are manifold:

  1. Coalition Challenges: Germany's political system is built on coalition governments, with no single party typically securing an outright majority. A strong performance by the AfD could complicate coalition-building efforts, as most mainstream parties have ruled out collaborating with the far-right. This could lead to prolonged negotiations and an unstable government.

  2. Policy Shifts: If the AfD gains significant representation in the Bundestag, it could push for policies that align with its far-right agenda. This could include stricter immigration controls, a rollback of EU integration efforts, and a more nationalistic approach to foreign policy. Such shifts could have far-reaching consequences for Germany's role in the EU and its relationships with other countries.

  3. Social Polarization: The rise of the AfD has already contributed to increased polarization in German society. The party's rhetoric, often criticized for being xenophobic and divisive, has heightened tensions between different social and ethnic groups. A strong AfD presence in the Bundestag could exacerbate these divisions, leading to more social unrest and challenges to social cohesion.

  4. Impact on European Politics: Germany is a key player in the EU, and any significant political shifts within the country are likely to reverberate across the continent. A stronger far-right presence in Germany could embolden similar movements in other European countries, leading to a more fragmented and polarized EU. This could complicate efforts to address common challenges such as climate change, migration, and economic inequality.

The Broader Implications

The potential success of the far-right in Germany's elections is not just a national issue; it has broader implications for the future of democracy and international relations. The rise of far-right movements across Europe and beyond is often linked to growing discontent with globalization, economic inequality, and perceived threats to national identity.

  1. Democratic Backsliding: The rise of far-right parties is often associated with challenges to democratic norms and institutions. These parties tend to prioritize majoritarian rule over the protection of minority rights, leading to concerns about the erosion of democratic checks and balances. In Germany, a strong AfD showing could test the resilience of the country's democratic institutions.

  2. Geopolitical Shifts: Germany's role as a leader in the EU and a key ally of the United States could be called into question if the far-right gains more influence. The AfD's skepticism towards NATO and its calls for closer ties with Russia could lead to a realignment of Germany's foreign policy, with potential implications for global security and the balance of power.

  3. The Future of the European Union: The EU is already grappling with multiple challenges, including Brexit, the rise of populist movements, and tensions between member states over issues such as migration and economic policy. A stronger far-right presence in Germany could further strain the union, particularly if the AfD pushes for policies that undermine EU solidarity and integration.

Conclusion

As Germans prepare to cast their votes, the rise of the far-right represents a critical juncture for the country and the wider world. The AfD's potential breakthrough in the upcoming elections could trigger a political earthquake, reshaping Germany's political landscape and sending shockwaves across Europe and beyond. The outcome of these elections will not only determine the future direction of Germany but also serve as a bellwether for the state of democracy and the rise of populist movements in the 21st century.

Judge blocks Biden administration from granting legal status to immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens

A federal judge in Texas on Monday temporarily blocked the Biden administration from granting legal status to unauthorized immigrants married to American citizens, granting a request from 16 Republican-led states who challenged the new policy.

The order by District Court Judge J. Campbell Barker effectively brings to a halt a large immigration program that opened just last week to an estimated half a million immigrants living in the U.S. without legal status. While preliminary and temporary, the ruling is also an early blow to one of the two major moves taken by President Biden in June on immigration, a top campaign issue in the 2024 race for president.

Announced just weeks after another executive action that has greatly curtailed access to asylum at the southern border, the program, known as Keeping Families Together, was announced as a measure to address the plight of some of the undocumented immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for years in legal limbo.

The policy allows unauthorized immigrants to apply for temporary work permits and deportation protections, under an immigration benefit known as parole, if they are married to U.S. citizens, have lived in the country for at least 10 years and pass background checks. The program is also open to the undocumented stepchildren of U.S. citizens. Those with felony convictions are ineligible for process.

Most importantly, the program also unlocks a streamlined pathway to permanent residency and, after several years, U.S. citizenship, for eligible immigrants.

Immigrants, including those living in the U.S. illegally, can get a green card if they marry an American citizen. But U.S. law generally requires those who entered the U.S. illegally to leave the country and re-enter legally to be eligible for a green card. Doing so, however, can trigger a 3- or 10-year ban from the U.S., prompting many mixed-status families not to pursue that option.

While the Biden administration has argued its initiative promotes family unity in households that include U.S. citizens, Texas and the other Republican-controlled states said in a lawsuit filed Friday that the policy rewards illegal immigration. The red states, which have challenged nearly every major Biden administration immigration move, said the policy misused the immigration parole authority.

On Monday, Barker, the federal judge in Texas appointed by former President Donald Trump, issued an administrative order prohibiting the Department of Homeland Security from granting parole to those applying for the Keeping Families Together policy.

Barker made his order valid for 14 days but he suggested he could extend it. While they can't approve them, federal officials can continue accepting applications under the program.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Naree Ketudat confirmed on Tuesday the agency had stopped approving cases under the process.

"Keeping Families Together enables U.S. citizens and their family members to live without fear of separation, consistent with fundamental American values," Ketudat said. "The Department of Homeland Security will comply with the court's decision, including continuing to accept applications, while we defend Keeping Families Together in court."
